DOCUMENTARY

WE ARE THE ST. LAWRENCE

“I’ve never seen the St. Lawrence River presented like this.”  - David Suzuki

Age of Union, a global non-profit environmental alliance, supports and makes visible a global community working on the ground to protect the planet’s threatened species and ecosystems.

We were commissioned by them to create a poetic documentary of the St. Lawrence Seaway and the people that live and depend on its health.

Brief

International commerce and and all the flora and fauna in its ecosystem rely on the St. Lawrence. However, its health is rapidly declining.

Over 20% of the world's fresh water flows through it and the human impact is about to irreversibly erode its ecological viability within 10 years if we don't start to make changes in our relationship with it.

Our objective was to highlight the importance of this river, to get Canadians to fall in love with it again, and to see the Saint Lawrence Seaway as more than a shipping corridor.

Solution

Working with the Nature Conservancy of Canada, the largest NGO land owner in Canada, got my feet wet. Really wet. I traveled with top environmental scientists along the length of the river to the Atlantic, documenting its history, its ecological importance and the UNESCO ecological sites along its path.

I wrote, directed and produced this film as well as creating all the social media promotional materials, advertising and film trailers.

Results

We Are The St. Lawrence was so well received that it is now a permanent feature on Air Canada's inflight entertainment systems as well as the Age of Union film showcase.

The film is also being used as an educational tool in local communities and as a part of global environmental awareness.
